Deciding which charities to donate to can be a important decision to a lot of people. Even after weeding out the fraudulent charities, there is a long list of organization that could use all the help they can get. Below, I have listed a number of charities that proactively assist immigrants and the families of immigrants.
With children being treated harshly and separated from their parents, there is no greater time to donate to immigrant-focused charities than now.
The Frontera Fund
Based in Arizona, The Frontera Fund blossomed from controversy.
Joe Arpaio was running rampant on Maricopa County, Arizona as their Sheriff. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were two of the first journalists to pursue Joe Arpaio in the printed page. It was Larkin and Lacey, through the Phoenix New Times, who first exposed Joe Arpaio for the corrupt law enforcement officer he was.
Joe Arpaio didn’t take kindly to their actions; he ordered his deputies to arrest Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, violating their rights as journalists.
As a result of the illegal arrest, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were awarded a settlement which they used to found The Frontera Fund.
Years after its creation, The Frontera Fund is now partnered with over a dozen organizations. They assist immigrants by educating them about the proper methods of pursuing citizenship.
Arizona DREAM Act Coalition
This is one of the organization that are partnered with The Frontera Fund.
The Arizona DREAM Act Coalition was itself founded by illegal immigrants. The organization was founded in order to lower the cost of college for undocumented students. In 2006, a law was passed that made undocumented students pay more for the same education as American citizens. This is the law that the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition works to overturn.
Immigrant Defense Project
This charities goal is to raise social awareness for immigrants and their hard way of life. This charity also provides legal representation for illegal immigrants, helping them find their way through the difficult legal process of becoming an American citizen.
